EATING DISORDER RECOVERY YOGA
ABOUT THE STYLE
Amy uses a gentle, trauma informed approach to these recovery classes that keep in mind that you may struggle with body checking, various sensations and ongoing negative self talk. Every movement will be an invitation that you can choose not to take. The classes are designed for any body shape, size or colour as long as you are medically stable. There is no focus on strength, flexibility or achievement at all. It is a time to nurture the bond with your body that your eating disorder destroyed. Classes go for 1 hour, including a check in before and after the class. We choose to come from a body neutral approach, as body positivity can be very overwhelming for some.
WILL I BE SAFE?
Feeling safe is an essential part of these classes. These classes are run as private lessons, unless you choose to have a family, friend or support person with you. Some movements may feel uncomfortable or triggering, but Amy is there is guide and support you through any moments of distress. You will be regularly asked to check in on your thoughts and take note of any negative self talk. You will be given a card that you can turn over at any moment that says "I need some support", as sometimes it can be hard to vocalise that you need some help. Amy will attend to you, to assist you through any physical or emotional challenge. We encourage all students to advise beforehand of any smells, sounds or phrases that are particularly difficult for them. We also welcome the presence of registered therapy dogs (studio policy permitting).
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
ED Recovery classes are an opportunity to learn a great number of things. It depends what you want to get out of it. At the base level, you can learn to reconnect and trust your body through movement, breath and meditation. You can learn how the principals of yoga can be applied to modern life and in your recovery journey. Some of the key themes in the classes are tolerating sensations in the body, taking up space with the body, movement that feels good and tolerating discomfort.
